1. Steven Spielberg has dropped out of “American Sniper,” the Bradley Cooper-led Navy SEAL film based on the book “American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History,” written by Chris Kyle, Scott McEwan, and Jim DeFelice. Spielberg recently dropped out of “Robopocalypse,” a film that was set to star Anne Hathaway, and it’s being reported that he is focusing his time on the upcoming adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath,” which he is producing. 2. Josh Gad, co-star in the original Broadway run of “The Book of Mormon,” not to mention failed NBC sitcom “1600 Penn,” has been cast in an upcoming biopic of deceased loud-mouthed comedian Sam Kinison. The project, currently titled “Kinison,” will be directed by Larry Charles and is based on “Brother Sam,” a biography by the comedian’s brother, Bill Kinison. “The film picks up the Kinison story in the 80s, as he transitions from the family business of Pentecostal preaching and into stand up comedy in Hollywood,” according to reports. 3. Because Hollywood insists on ruining my childhood memories, there is currently a remake of “Poltergeist” in the works, set to be directed by Gil Kenan (“Monster House”), with a script from playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Rosemarie DeWitt has already been cast as the female lead, and now reports suggest Sam Rockwell, who stars in “The Way Way Back,” will take the male lead. “Rockwell would play the patriarch of the Bowen family — they were the Freeling family in the original — whose lives are uprooted when youngest daughter Madison is abducted by supernatural forces that trap her in the netherworld between life and death.” Tobe Hopper directed the original, which still haunts my dreams. [The Wrap]
4. After actress Selma Blair left “Anger Management,” Charlie Sheen’s FX “comedy,” on bad terms in June, I imagined no actress in Hollywood would want to work with the troubled actor. I’ve been proven wrong. Laura Bell Bundy, the Tony Award-nominated star of Broadway’s “Legally Blonde,” will join the show as Dr. Jordan Denby, described as “a brilliant psychologist whose recent divorce, fondness for alcohol and wild mood swings turn Charlie’s life into an emotional roller coaster.” So she’s basically just playing Charlie Sheen, right? [Artsbeat]
5. Indie-electronic artist M83 has released a video for “Claudia Lewis,” a track off his latest album, “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming.” Directed by Bryce Dallas Howard (actress, and daughter of Ron Howard), the clip features actors Lily Collins and Israel Broussard (“The Bling Ring”) and is inspired by Nicholas Roeg’s “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” starring David Bowie.
